Welcome from Principal Ball
Welcome to Horizon Elementary, home of the Huskies! At Horizon, we are proud to serve our community as a dual-language Spanish school, where many students learn to thrive academically while also developing the valuable skill of bilingualism. Our dedicated staff works each day to create a safe, supportive, and engaging environment where every child feels valued and inspired to succeed. We believe in fostering curiosity, building strong character, and empo
wering students to become leaders in a diverse and connected world. Families are an essential part of our school community, and together we celebrate the traditions, cultures, and strengths that make Horizon a truly special place. Whether you are new to our school or a returning Husky, we are excited to partner with you in creating an outstanding year of growth and learning. ¡Bienvenidos a Horizon Elementary!
A Brief History of Horizon Elementary
By 1979, increased traffic on the west side of Murray caused concerned parents to petition the school board for better safety measures. Although the board considered several options, they eventually responded by building a new school at 5180 South 700 West. During a board meeting in February 1981, the name “Horizon” was chosen for the new elementary school, and it was completed by November of the same year.
In 2009, Horizon pioneered the first Dual Language Immersion (DLI) program in the District. currently, the DLI program provides dual language learning in Spanish for about 350 students. As part of the program, these students continue their language training through Hillcrest Jr. High and Murray High School.
Horizon also holds annual Spring and Fall carnivals that are very popular. They also have a strong and robust slate of PTA activities for the community to enjoy. In December, a Sub-for-Santa Program is conducted school-wide with SelectHealth, a valued business partner in the community.
Great educators, administrators and staff, parents, and the best students around make Horizon Elementary a unique and dynamic learning atmosphere with a rich history at MCSD!
